Motherhood is the most beautiful moment in every girl’s life. Today, most of the couples face the problem of infertility. Many women cannot conceive due to hormonal problems. Infertility in a woman can be caused by several reasons like stress, depression, damage to fallopian tubes, drinking, smoking, problems in a uterus and other health issues.
IVF which is In Vitro Fertilization is the latest method to get pregnant. It is the process in which the eggs and sample of sperm are combined in the labs to see the chances of pregnancy. The embryo is then moved to the uterus by which the chances of pregnancy may increase.
More than 6 million babies in the USA are born through IVF technology. It is also known as assisted reproductive technology (ART).
Why is IVF used?
We discussed above that many couples face infertility problems in family planning. In Vitro Fertilization treatment helps the couples who want to have a baby with a natural process. This treatment is used in some of the most advanced countries of the world such as USA, UK, Australia, and others.
IVF is used in the following cases:
- Women above the age of 40 years who face infertility problems.
- Women whose fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged.
- It can be used in males who have low sperm count and other male disorders.
- Women who have endometriosis and uterine fibroids.
- Couples who face genetic disorders.
- Women who face premature ovarian failure and ovulation disorders.
Process of IVF
We will further discuss the detailed process of IVF. There are mainly 5 steps involved in the process of In Vitro Fertilization.
Stopping the menstrual cycle
The first step in IVF treatment is to stop the menstrual cycles in the women naturally. To stop the menstrual cycles, the doctors give an injection for continuously 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, the women stop getting the regular menstrual cycles.
It is important for the woman’s body to produce eggs for conceiving. After stopping menstrual cycles, doctors suggest women take fertility drugs. These drugs contain follicle stimulating hormone in more quantities. Through these fertility drugs, the ovaries will produce more eggs in women. You can then take help of vaginal ultrasound scans to see whether the ovaries produce sufficient eggs for ovulation.
Removing the eggs
The third step in In Vitro treatment process is to collect the eggs from the body of women. A small surgery takes place which is called as “follicular aspiration”. In this surgery, a small needle is put into ovary through the vagina. This process takes place through a suction device which pulls the eggs quickly out of the woman’s body. Likewise, 15 eggs are pulled with the help of follicular aspiration to increase the chances of pregnancy. Even the frozen eggs are used in this process
The 4th step is the fertilization of collected eggs. In this step, the collected eggs are combined with male sperm and stored in a cool chamber. The sperm takes some hours to combine with the eggs. The doctors use intracytoplasmic sperm injection to inject sperm into the eggs. Frozen sperm can also be used in this process. After the sperm enters the eggs, the embryo is formed.
Transfer of embryo
The last step in the process of IVF is the transfer of embryo in the body of women. With the help of a thin tube, the embryo is transferred in the womb of the women. When the embryo is stuck to the womb lining, the growth of embryo begins.
